YOGA IS NOT RELIGION

What Is Yoga and Spirituality?

Yoga is NOT religious. The Mind-Body Connection is a spiritual center that welcomes people of ALL nationalities and religions. True yoga encourages the belief in a higher power of your own choosing, and we want to help each member of our community to embrace that and to help you integrate your yoga practice into your existing beliefs.

Spirituality is the process of answering the question, "Who am I?" Starting in childhood, we, as a society, are taught to identify with the things in our life. Our family, education, job, relationship, activities, religious and political affiliations, likes, dislikes, etc. become our identity. If you take away all those things, can you answer the question, "Who am I?" The problem is in life, none of these exterior things are permanent. Eventually, we may lose the job or the relationship, likes and dislikes change, and our whole identity becomes unstable. We become "traumatized," and then what often happens is the trauma may become our new identity. This is what leads to stress, depression, anxiety, co-dependency, addiction, health problems, etc. By practicing yoga, we can move beyond identification with these things. This does not mean that we have to give any of them up. It simply means that our identity within ourselves has become stable, and all the comings and goings of life no longer have control over us. This is what it means to be in a state of yoga.

Yoga Means "Union"

The literal translation of the word "yoga" is union. Unfortunately, these days, this translation is greatly misunderstood. At the Mind-Body Connection, the "union" we are talking about is the union of who you think you are and the part of you that has been long buried deep down inside. There is a part of you that is okay even when things in your life aren't okay. We refer to this as the Self. We want to unify you with who you really are and to connect you with the part of yourself that has been unscathed by comings and goings of daily life, the part of you that can handle all the challenges of modern life, and not be controlled by them, the part of you that is always at peace and is peaceful. This is Yoga.
