5 Tips For
Lasting
Back Pain Relief From A Yoga Therapist

By The Mind-Body Connection's Founder and Yoga Therapist, Kevala

Lets face it, back pain is something that affects nearly everyone at some point, often becoming a constant companion that can even disrupt sleep or greet us first thing in the morning. It can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of your daily life. It can make simple tasks seem impossible, drain your energy, and leave you feeling frustrated and helpless. The constant discomfort and limited mobility can impact your work, sleep, your mood, your productivity, and overall well-being.

The problem is that our unavoidable daily activities contribute to 80% of our back pain. Seemingly simple tasks like sitting at a desk or computer for hours, scrolling on our phones, or enduring long commutes can wreak havoc on our bodies. The neck and lower back, being the most mobile parts of the spine, end up doing all the work, while the chest and shoulders become hunched and immobile, as they are locked in place by the ribcage. This imbalance creates a cascade of issues: the overworked neck and lower back muscles become strained and tense, while the immobile thoracic spine and shoulders lead to poor posture and restricted breathing.

As we age, our mobility naturally decreases, exacerbating these problems. Conditions like scoliosis, which may start in childhood, often worsen over time due to the compounded effects of poor posture and decreased spinal flexibility. Without proper intervention, these issues can lead to chronic pain, reduced range of motion, and a significant decline in overall quality of life. Even mild, generalized back pain can escalate into a severe issue if left untreated over time.

Traditional treatments often provide only temporary relief, leaving you searching for a lasting solution. However, incorporating specific yoga techniques into your routine can offer significant and lasting relief. Practices like Viniyoga and therapeutic yoga focus on gentle stretches, strengthening exercises, and mindful breathing to target the root causes of back pain, helping you reclaim your mobility and enjoy a pain-free life.

5 Yoga Tips for Reducing Back Pain

1. Avoid Hinging at the Hips.

Hinging at the hips when bending over can lock the spine, causing the lower back to do most of the work. This creates excessive strain on the low back and can exacerbate pain.

2. Engage the Lower Abdomen When Bending Forward.

Drawing in the lower abdomen on exhale while bending forward allows the low back to round, followed by the mid and upper back. This technique promotes movement throughout the entire spine and engages the core muscles, which helps protect and support the lower back.

3. Link Breath with Movement.

Linking your breath with movement enhances the effectiveness of each pose and promotes better spinal alignment. Inhale deeply to prepare and expand the body, then exhale fully as you move into a pose or stretch. This coordination helps reduce tension and encourages smoother, more controlled movements.

4. Strengthen Core Muscles.

Working on your core muscles provides greater stability and strength, which in turn supports the lower back. Incorporate exercises that target the abdominal muscles, obliques, and lower back to create a balanced support system and reduce the risk of back pain.

5. Incorporate Purvatana Postures.

Purvatana postures, such as backbends and chest openers, can help open up the front of the spine and counteract a hunched upper back. These poses improve spinal flexibility and posture, which can reduce discomfort and eliminate pain associated with a rounded or hunched over upper back.

So, knowing the tips on how to reduce and eliminate back pain is one thing, but actually integrating them and reaping those rewards is another. But don't worry, we're here to help.
